Jay Newman

Jay Newman has never once paused his service to the residents of Upper Township.

Newman is a 1979 graduate of Ocean City High School and a 1983 graduate of the Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in Charleston, SC., where he earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration. He also learned the values of service, sacrifice and patriotism from the best and the training he received there gave him the leadership skills needed to remain calm in any crisis.

Newman has worn many hats in Upper Township. He served as a member of the Marmora Fire Company most of his adult life, 43 years to be exact. Jay currently serves as the Chief of the Marmora Fire Company and has held this position for over25 years, which is the 2nd longest serving Chief in Upper Township. Newman is a part-time EMT with the Upper Township Rescue Squad. His motto is to always be at the ready when there is a neighbor in need. He is on duty 24/7.

Newman decided to put all of those skills to use while helping his community and raising a family. When he and his wife, Fran, married 37 years ago, they made their home and raised their two boys in Upper Township. Fran retired in 2018 from her career as a Occupational Therapist at Atlantic County Special Services School District and today works on a part-time basis in the same capacity with kids in many school districts throughout Cape May and Atlantic County. She has served on the Upper Township School Board for over 20 years. She also serves as one of Upper Township School Board’s representatives on the Ocean City School Board.

John, 32, their oldest son, a 2007 graduate of Ocean City High School and a 2011 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, is currently serving our nation as a Major in the Security Forces. John is stationed at joint base Hickam/Pearl in Honolulu, Hawaii and is due to take his first command at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam in June of 2021.

Their youngest son, Mark, 28, is a 2010 graduate of Ocean City High School, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, and holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Rowan University. He now uses that education as a 2nd grade Special Education teacher at the Upper Township Primary School. He is very much loved by his students. Mark serves alongside his father as a Deputy Chief with the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company. He is also a part-time EMT with the Upper Township Rescue Squad and a part-time dispatcher for Ocean City Police Communications.

Newman has previously served 12 years on the Upper Township Committee. During that time, he oversaw the Departments of Recreation, Public Safety, Fire and EMS. Newman retired from political life after an unsuccessful re-election bid, but never abandoned his involvement in the community of Upper Township. With dignity, he accepted the newly elected members of the Township Committee and pledged his support.

Newman was enjoying his time out of the spotlight, but Covid-19 and the decision of two incumbents to retire turned a twist of fate into a drum beat to bring Jay Newman back to public office. Once again, Jay Newman was asked to lend his experience and dedication at the Township Committee by standing for election in a write-in campaign in the 2021 Primary Election.

Jay Newman pulled off one of the most exciting primary victories in the history of Upper Township by winning his place on the November ballot with a write-in campaign effort.
